Community Service Spotlight – Love Your City Norcross
Once a quarter, GYP shines a spotlight on nonprofits who are doing great work in the community to encourage volunteers to go out and make an impact in the Gwinnett community!
Love Your City is a community development program created by Boy With a Ball. Their mission is to better cities by reaching and equipping young people to turn and transform their communities. Through the Love Your City program, Boy With a Ball engages with local communities across the globe by connecting with neighborhoods and addressing community needs as they see them arise. Learn more about Love Your City here.
In Gwinnett, Boy with a Ball currently holds weekly ESL classes for adults in the community, weekly tutoring for young people, and an ongoing apprenticeship program that connects seniors to trade schools. Volunteers are invited to participate as tutors, teachers, and mentors or on walkthrough routes, where they connect with each family to see how they’re doing. Volunteers don’t need to have any teaching experience to come — the only thing required is a willing heart to connect and build relationships!
The structure of the day:
First, volunteers will meet at the Nett Church (5320 Jimmy Carter Blvd, Norcross, GA 30093) for a quick orientation about what Love Your City is and what the day will look like. Next, the group will spend time in the local apartment community where Love Your City occurs every Saturday. Volunteers will help tutor the youth and connect with families. Afterward, the group will gather for lunch at Plaza Las Americas, which has excellent Latin food, and have chance to meet more of the Love Your City Team and hear more about what their nonprofit does in our community.
